ABOUT ORGANIZATION

GOONJ (means an echo) a multi award winning social enterprise, uses the cities discard for fueling wide spread development work across village India. While dealing with more than 4000 tons of material annually, Goonj reaches this material to remote rural communities, creating barter between two new currencies urban underutilized material and the wisdom, efforts of rural communities, to solve some of their neglected issues around water, agriculture, education, access etc. (Please find enclosed a Goonj profile)

Two decades of Goonj’s work is a testimony to the fact that tonnes of urban surplus collected has the power to resolve neglected issues i.e. water, sanitation, education, agriculture, health, environment etc. in the under-served areas. The work is now spread across 23 states of India with 13+ offices involving thousands of people in cities and villages.  Goonj has done massive disaster relief and rehab work, turning every disaster into an opportunity to reach resources and attention to most ignored communities. By using even disaster wastage as tool for livelihood and dignity, Goonj proves its ability to transform simple ideas into a new currency for development..

Goonj’s founder Mr. Anshu Gupta was conferred with the prestigious Ramon Magsaysay Award in 2015 for his enterprising leadership and for changing the culture of Giving in India.

OUR PROJECT

School to School

There is an enormous inequality in access to quality education in India, resulting in massive inequality of opportunity for children in the villages. There are many unmet basic learning material needs in small village schools.

Urban school children on the other hand buy and discard a lot of learning material regularly. They know little about valuing their abundant resources or the environmental risks of their practices. Most importantly as future citizens of our country city children have little  awareness and empathy about rural issues and rural education.

In urban schools, Goonj actively works with school children by engaging them in exposure visits, awareness sessions and collection drives through volunteers and school partners.

Goonj creates School kits from urban surplus. These are used in rural schools, to encourage and motivate schools, parents and children tocollectively work towards creating a supportive environment for accessible education by building schools, making boundaries,  kitchen garden, playground etc and their efforts are rewarded with school materials and basic essential fulfilling familial needs.
