ABOUT ORGANIZATION

Operation Eyesight Universal, which was founded in Calgary, Canada in 1963, is an international development organization working to prevent blindness and restore sight in India and around the world. Guided by our vision of “the elimination of avoidable blindness” and philosophy of “the best for the poorest,” we work with our partners to provide quality eye care services to everyone, irrespective of their gender, caste, religion and capacity to pay for services. We partner with the government, hospitals, medical professionals and community developments teams to establish vision centres, perform eye surgeries and provide patients with prescription eyeglasses. Through our model of intervention, we are proud to align with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, ensuring sustainable service for entire communities.

Currently in India, we are present in 16 states, implementing 90 projects with 103 vision centres. To date, we have declared 1,010 avoidable blindness-free villages, screened more than 26 lakh people, conducted 2.32 lakh surgeries and provided 2.9 lakh pairs of eyeglasses. Over the last decade alone we have built the capacities of over 3,000 medical and para-medical eye health personnel, over 6,000 government primary healthcare workers and over 1,000 community eye health workers.

OUR PROJECT

With your support, we plan to declare villages in Yacharam, Hyderabad as avoidable blindness-free! Avoidable blindness-free means that no individual in the village has visual acuity less than 6/60 in the better eye due to avoidable or treatable conditions.

Objectives

• Create available access to quality primary eye care services in the targeted villages.

• Strengthen existing vision centres to deliver quality eye care services to larger service areas.

• Empower the target communities to take ownership of their eye health.

Impact

We believe that avoidable blindness will be eliminated when everyone has access to quality eye care, regardless of their ability to pay. Through our Hospital-Based Community Eye Health Program model, we partner with local hospitals and help build their capacity, so they can reach and treat more people in their service areas. We help improve their facilities, establish vision centres and educate people in the surrounding communities about the importance of eye health.

Avoidable blindness and visual impairment severely impact the lives of children and women. A child suffering from visual impairment is often treated as a slow learner, and many will discontinue their education. This project will help address such issues and enable children to continue with their education, so one day they can earn an income and provide for their families. Similarly, addressing the problem of avoidable blindness among women will provide them with opportunities to earn an income and contribute to the local economy.

Lastly, the project will have a significant impact on the public health system, as the target communities will benefit from improved quality of primary health services on a sustained basis.

Goal: To eliminate avoidable blindness from villages of Yacharam, Hyderabad.
